Can Getting Covid-19 Result In Getting Diabetes?

This morning I was watching the news when something completely caught my attention so I wanted to share. There has been an alarming amount of people who have gotten COVID19 who have ended up getting Diabetes type 1. I wanted to dig a little deeper into COVID and diabetes here to understand a little better if this is true.

COVID and Diabetes

Type 1 diabetes is caused when cells in the pancreas don’t create enough insulin to allow the body to appropriately metabolize food. When this happens, blood sugar levels rise. There have been a few studies recently that are starting to correlate patients who have had the COVID19 virus and a higher rate of Type 1 Diabetes because the virus can impair the body’s natural insulin-producing cells.

This is so alarming and a REALLY big deal.

Signs and Symptoms of Type 1 Diabetes

More and more patients who are being discharged from the hospital after having the COVID19 virus are leaving with elevated blood sugar levels. Many hospitals are now recommending a couple blood sugar test after being discharged to monitor their levels due to these new findings.

Some signs and symptoms of Diabetes 1:

  • Frequent urination
  • Unintended weight loss
  • Fatigue
  • Extreme thirst
  • Blurry vision
  • Slow healing of wounds

If you are experiencing any of the above after having COVID, you should speak to your medical provider.

The fact that COVID and diabetes could actually be correlated is a huge eye opener to how serious this virus really is. I am not a doctor by any means so I’d suggest you reading the science behind these initial studies yourself (Source – NIH) but it’s just another reminder to protect yourself. If you haven’t gotten vaccinated yet, this is just one more nudge to hopefully encourage you to do so. Neither COVID or Diabetes are things you want to mess around with!

XOXO
