Home Gym DIY Pegboard Wall

Recently I broke down and bought myself a new toy.  I bought a treadmill for my house!  For all the days that I can’t make it to the gym, or just feel like watching The Bachelor while walking on the treadmill, I can now do that at home.  Yay!  I also wanted to share this adorable DIY Pegboard Wall I created for my home gym / workout room and it’s so easy that anyone can do it.

I recently purchased a new home and it has 3 bedrooms in it.  My idea was to have a master bedroom, a guest bedroom and a third room being an office.  Well…I started to think and realized that I use a laptop and there’s no need for an actual office as I usually work from my couch or bedroom or wherever the heck I want.  Soo….I decided to turn the extra room into a workout room instead.  Maybe this will force me to workout more often…let’s see if that happens 😉

So here’s a look at how my extra room looked a few days ago…it had become a dumping area with a bunch of extra crap that I don’t know what to do with yet. I needed to make that space have a purpose.

Yeah it was not a pretty sight..

So I ended up buying this beautiful machine.  It’s the NordicTrack T 6.5S Treadmill. I have to admit..I’m a researcher and kinda obsess over the whole research process to make sure I get the best deal when I make a big purchase like this.  Well this one seemed to have all the bells and whistles at the best price.  It works great and I’m SO happy with it so far.

So after throwing my new fancy treadmill in the room, I ran on it a few times and realized that I needed to spruce up the walls a bit since they were completely empty. They were a fresh slate and I wanted to add something that was cute but also functional for a workout room / home gym.

See…super boring looking right now!

I decided to make a DIY Pegboard Wall Organizer.  Here’s the final picture and then I’ll explain how I did it.

It turned out pretty cute, huh?  I think so!

The best part of all this was that it’s SOOOOO easy and anyone can do this simple DIY project.  It can also be done for any room.

I got my supplies all on Amazon and at Lowes.

I headed over to Lowes and picked up the pegboard.  They usually have white or brown (unpainted) in stock.  You’ll want to get the white one to avoid having to paint it.  Unfortunately, when I went to Lowes, they were out of the white one in the size I wanted so I got the brown one and decided I’ll just paint it to make it white.

Make sure to measure your wall before heading to the store so you know what size you want and have the people at Lowes cut it to size in store. They do it for free!

You can also get these pegboards and mostly any other home improvement store including Home Depot and Menards.

Here are some of the supplies I bought.  Since I was painting my pegboard, I already had my favorite Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 primer and threw on one coat with a roller.  This stuff is the best for any surface.  I’ve used it to prime so many different surfaces for tons of projects.

Then I spray painted it to make it bright white with a gloss.  You could just use paint if you wanted to.  I actually wish I would have used paint since spray paint can end up kinda sticky.  I’d shoot for a semi gloss bright white paint and roll it on.

When the paint was dry, I brought it in the house and started planning it’s placement on the wall.  I’m a little OCD so I used some painters tape to mark the outline of the board so I could get a good visual before mounting it.

When I found the perfect spot for it, I used my stud finder to figure out where the studs were.  It’s always best to drill into studs to mount it securely.  The best part of using pegboard is you can use any of the million holes in the pegboard to screw through and make it work with wherever the studs are!

Whenever you have a pegboard wall, there needs to be a bit of space between the wall and the board so that you can hang things through the holes of the board.  You can do this by just adding a few nuts to the backside of your drywall screw to create a DIY spacer.

I wish I would have known because the hanging kit I bought actually had spacers in it!  This is the kit that I got with all the pegboard accessories you could ever need all in one and it was only like $10. I’d highly suggest getting a pegboard kit if you’re doing a project like this.  They have 43 pieces of all different types of hooks to use..PLUS spacers for this step.

Either way, just make sure you add spacers or DIY your own spacers like I did.  Use some drywall screws and mount your pegboard into the studs.

Don’t you love my drill? haha I LOVE being a handy girl with a pink drill!  It’s The Original Pink Box drill and it’s not one of those cheap pink ones that can barely drill into a wall.  This is a real deal “big girl” drill with enough voltage and power to do some heavy duty projects.  Makes me kinda want to do the Home Improvement show Tim Allen grunt noise.  Am I showing my age here with Home Improvement references? lol oh well.

After hanging it, add all your fun accessories from your pegboard wall kit and make it however you want it to look.  It’s so easy to rearrange the hooks and make it work with anything and everything.

I got the two pink buckets at the dollar section at Target.

Overall this whole project was a piece of cake and it adds such a nice feature to my workout room / home gym.  It also has a purpose and holds all my workout accessories like my headbands, heart rate monitors, workout log, hair ties, race medals, race bibs and much more 🙂
