Hangry 101 – Your Guide To Being Hangry

HANGRY 101

Have you heard of the word “hangry” lately?  Unless you’ve been living under a rock, I’m sure you’ve heard someone use the word hangry in the past year.  Personally, I knew of this word before the term became popular because of my father.  Sorry Dad, but you know it’s true.  If he doesn’t eat at his scheduled “feeding time” every day, the man can get a bit irritable…As can I.  #TRUTH

What Does Hangry Mean?

Hangry is the word to describe the feeling of being so hungry that you become angry.  Combine hungry and angry, you get the glorious word of hangry.  I also like how Urban Dictionary defines it….

Poor Randy..  But I think we have all been Randy…and Allen at some point.  Admit it!

Is being Hangry actually a real thing? According to science?

According to a recent study, being hangry IS actually a thang…

In our bodies, we need our carbohydrates, proteins and fats in balance.  If one of these goes missing, our bodies say WTF?  Basically, everything we eat will eventually turn into simple sugars (such as glucose), amino acids and free fatty acids.  At that point, they will flow into your bloodstream and then eventually disbursed to your organs and tissues.  This is where our energy comes from on a daily basis.

When we go a while without eating, or body starts to get confused with the missing nutrients flowing through our bloodstream.  If your blood-glucsoe levels drop far enough, your body will then go into something I like to call “survival mode”.  Your body will begin to feel threatened and start to hold onto every bit it has left.  The main source of function for your brain is glucose, so when your glucose runs low, your brain starts to become threatened..hence why you start to feel a bit off.

Also, you may find yourself irritable with others when you’re hangry.  According to The Conversation, “Another thing that can become more difficult when you’re hungry is behaving within socially acceptable norms, such as not snapping at people. So while you may be able to conjure up enough brain power to avoid being grumpy with important colleagues, you may let your guard down and inadvertently snap at the people you are most relaxed with or care most about, such as partners and friends. Sound familiar?”

Yep….yep.  GUILTY HERE!

How to deal with hanger and being hangry

Eat something.  Yep, it’s that simple.  Always keep a snack in your purse or nearby at all times.  This will allow you to keep relationships with your loved ones in check.

Timing of your meals is also crucial.  Ideally, try to eat on a schedule of every 3-4 hours.  Eating 3 large meals and 2 snacks between your meals is ideal.  You want to keep your blood sugar levels at bay so that there is never a dramatic dip throughout your day.

  1. I notice that I’m the most Hangry when I don’t have a set schedule to eat. I started Kelsey Byers 12-Weeks to Skinny Jeans Challenge, which has you eat every three hours, so I have been, like clockwork. Hangry is becoming a thing of the past for me, which is a relief. I’m almost Hulk-like when I’m Hangry.
