The Soup Diet Plus 10 Healthy Soup Recipes To Try!

As I was on the treadmill today, I was watching an episode of The Doctors.  I’m always a bit hesitant of shows that promote a lot of different products and diets, but today something caught my eye and I wanted to research it a bit more and do a post about it.  Today’s topic was all about The Soup Diet.

What is A Soup Diet?

It’s as simple as it sounds.  It’s a diet where you only eat soups.  I’m not surprised this is becoming a thing since juicing and cleansing is so popular these days as well.  On a soup diet, you can have a variety of different types of soups, each of which should be mostly vegetable based.

Benefits of a Soup Diet

The thing I like the best about the soup diet is that you can still add hearty protein and veggies to the soup.  We’re not talking about a soup diet that’s just broth (because I’ve heard that one before and that’s NO GOOD).  You can still eat a healthy soup that has the correct balance of macro-nutrients (healthy carbohydrates, proteins and fats) and be satisfied afterwards.

Negatives of a Soup Diet

The one biggest negative I see to doing a soup diet is that it can be very high in sodium.  If you’re buying a pre-made soup from the store, make sure to opt for a low sodium soup.  I’d highly suggest making your own soup at home because then you can completely control the macro-nutrients.

A Soup Diet vs A Juicing Diet – What’s Better?

Alright guys, as you all know, I’m a fan of food..food you can actually eat and not drink so I’m just going to go off facts here on which would be better.  In my option, a soup diet could be the more viable option simply because it’s typically going to be lower in sugar content.  In most juice diets, several types of fruit are added to the drink to make them taste better.  In a typical soup diet, you’ll have mostly a vegetable/protein base (because no one wants to add fruit to a soup…ehhh yuck!).

Now that you have a better understanding of what a soup diet is, let’s dig a little deeper into one of the most popular soup diets you may have heard about and some other good soup diet recipes!

By the way, have you seen these adorable to-go soup containers?  You can pop them in the microwave and since they have a lid, you can take them to go.  I love them!

The Cabbage Soup Diet

One word…no!  There’s no variety to this.  The idea of this diet is to only eat cabbage soup.  First of all, that sounds pretty miserable and second of all there’s no variety to this diet and you will get sick of it quickly.   This diet is very low in complex carbohydrates, protein (basically none) and vitamins, I would never suggest doing this one for more than a week (if at all).  The main reason why you’ll lose weight on this diet is just water weight or possibly even muscle tissue loss.  I’d say skip the cabbage soup diet!!!
