I’m Fed Up Tonight! – My Thoughts On The Fed Up Documentary

Tonight I decided to take it easy and make it a Netflix night.  It seems like a lot of my nights lately have consisted of Netflix binging but hey, don’t judge!  Tonight I settled on the Fed Up Documentary.

This Fed Up documentary caught my eye because the caption on the main image said “The movie that will change the way people think about eating” and “Congress says pizza is a vegetable”.

According to IMDB, the movie summary is:

“Upending the conventional wisdom of why we gain weight and how to lose it, Fed Up unearths a dirty secret of the American food industry-far more of us get sick from what we eat than anyone has previously realized. Filmmaker Stephanie Soechtig and TV journalist Katie Couric lead us through this potent exposé that uncovers why-despite media attention, the public’s fascination with appearance, and government policies to combat childhood obesity-generations of American children will now live shorter lives than their parents did. Written by Sundance Film Festival

The Fed Up Documentary focuses on these few points:

  • We have a worldwide epidemic of obesity
  • Sugar is the main culprit of obesity issues (is more addictive than cocaine!)
  • The food industry is to blame for increased sugar consumption because it is aware of the affects sugar has on it’s customers yet they will put hidden sugar in processed foods and try to market them as healthier versions.  They are aware of the issue but don’t take products off the shelves to help the cause.
  • The government is also to blame because it has failed to control the food industry even though they know it’s going in the wrong direction and causing health care costs to spike.

Overall, I would give this movie about a 9 out of 10 stars.  I thought it had a lot of good points and was able to introduce some complex topics in simple ways.  For example, one of my favorite topics was when they discussed how all calories aren’t equal and one calorie doesn’t always equal one calorie.  In other words, you shouldn’t always just track calories alone, but look for more nutritional calories so your body is fueled right.  In their example, they talked about eating 160 calories of almonds vs 160 calories of a soft drink and how your body reacts completely different to the same amount of calories.

I won’t give away too much more information about the movie because I really encourage you to watch it yourself!!!

  1. I have yet to watch this, the last thing I watched may have scarred me for life honestly. That supersized movie made about fast food was horrid, but right on all counts. It’s hard to deny an obesity epidemic when it’s staring us in the face, and often I choose my entertainment to be just that…entertaining, but hiding from it doesn’t help. It took a long time to figure out that making healthier choices and portioning made a huge difference, and by eating better, cravings for all that nasty crap went away on it’s own.

  2. I was on netflix last night and stumped for what to watch, so this recommendation has great timing! I will definitely be checking this one out. The only other doco that I’ve seen that might be a little similar is Food Inc. (highly recommended to anyone BTW) which is about exposing a fair few injustices in the food industry… knowledge definitely equals power, so the more educated we can all become, the better!

  3. Hey Erin,
I totally agree with you: the movie is pretty good.

They seriously take a lot of air time talking about the excessive sugar consumption & blaming the government about people getting more and more obese. While this is the absolute truth and there were some details that really got me thinking, I know of no evidence that were we to eliminate all sugar from our diets & leaving the rest of the diet the same, we could rid ourselves of disease and restore our health.

The other thing I didn’t really like is that they didn’t succeed in changing the eating habits of the people they interviewed.
Apart from these flaws, the movie is worth watching
