The New Fitbit Surge – A Sneak Peak

If you guys have been following this page for a while, you probably know that I’m a HUGE technology & fitness geek.  When any new type of fitness tracker comes out, I get so excited.  Like a little kid on Christmas type of excited.  The newest wearable technology was accidentally leaked by Brookstone and it’s the new FitBit Surge!!

FitBit Surge

What is FitBit Surge?

FitBit Surge is the newest fitness tracker by the company that makes FitBits.  To this date, there have been several FitBits that have hit the market which all show time and track your steps, distance and calories.  This was great for tracking your steps throughout the day and was like a high tech pedometer.

I owned the first FitBit to use as a pedometer but it just didn’t do enough for me.  I need more information (that’s why I usually wear my polar heart rate monitor because it’s the only thing I’ve found to show accurate calories based off my heart rate)

The FitBit Surge is different from previous versions because it tracks heart rate!!!!  FINALLY!!!

By adding a heart rate monitor, you’re now able to track calorie burn for activities like weight lifting, yoga & cycling.  It’s not all based on steps anymore.  This is a huge improvement for this device.

What does the FitBit Surge do?

Not only does it track calories, steps, distance and heart rate monitor, but it also connects to your smart phone!

By connecting to your phone, this will allow the device to control your music and phone.   You will be able to see texts and phone alerts right on your wrist.  I’m assuming there’s also a fitbit smart phone app that will display graphs of your performance which is always nice.  Polar has an app like that and it’s great to see a breakdown of my workout and I assume the FitBit surge will have something similar.

I am curious to find out if there’s a chest strap that is required for this watch.  Most accurate rate rate monitors come with a band to wear around your rib cage to read your heart rate but I didn’t hear of anything like that for the FitBit Surge.  Does that mean the heart rate will be inaccurate?  We will see!!

When Can I Buy the FitBit Surge?

The FitBit Surge isn’t going to hit the markets until early 2015.  I really wish it were coming out earlier so I could put it on my Christmas list, but oh well.  I guess I have to wait!

This is just one of the many new devices that we will soon be seeing that are going to all fight over the area on our wrist.

Coming soon will be Apple’s extension to their phone that will be wearable on your wrist with a some fitness tracking features in the watch.

There’s the Intel powered Basis Peak which also a fitness tracker but also focuses on a sleep tracker.

Finally, there’s even the Pavloc!  Oh my gosh this little gadget is hilarious.  You set a daily goal for yourself – say 5,000 steps by 7pm.  If you don’t hit your goal, the watch will literally ZAP your arm to alert you for not hitting your goals.

What do you think of the FitBit Surge?  Do you think you’ll buy one??  Leave a comment below!

  1. What do I think? I think I need to become one of those little statues with 8 arms. I don’t have nearly enough wrists for this. It’s totally unfair. But maybe there’s hope, perhaps we can get them with belt like straps so we can put them all the way up our arms. There’s way too much goodness on the way in terms of gadgetry for fitness. EXCITED!
