Pelican Hill Gym Review

I always workout a lot before beach vacations.  I mean, doesn’t everyone try to shed a couple pounds before they know they are going to be in a swimsuit?  I find myself always working out extra hard before my vacations and finally find a groove of hitting the gym.  When It’s time to go on vacation, I still crave the gym when I’m there.

The worst is when your hotel website says they have a fitness center which turns out to be a closet with a broken treadmill and some rusty dumbbells.  I hate when that happens!  MOST of the time, hotel gyms simply SUCK and shouldn’t even be considered a gym.

When I find a good hotel/resort gym that I am a fan of, I love to give it the recognition that it deserves since no one EVER talks about hotel gyms when they review vacation spots.

Pelican Hill Resort

This resort is in the beautiful Newport Beach, California.  We have come here for two years now and I am just as in love with this place than I was when I first visited.  The resort itself is beyond beautiful.  I can’t even do the hotel justice by explaining how pretty it is and how well maintained this place is.  We usually stay in the South Villas.  Not only are the views, rooms and staff amazing here, but it’s also nice to be able to run into some celebrities when you’re staying here too!

Whenever we stay here, we find a way to hit up the gym every day.  We always go to the South Villas gym which is the one I’m going to review below.

Right before you reach the beautiful pool, you’ll find the fitness center.

What’s in the Pelican Hill South Villas Fitness Center?

It has everything a fitness lover needs!  There are 4 treadmills, 4 ellipticals (3 different types), one upright stationary bike and two regular stationary bikes.  That’s a LOT of variety for cardio if you ask me!  Most of the cardio equipment was made by Precor.  Each machine has it’s own tv which you can control yourself.  That’s always my fave because you can control what to watch and how loud it is!

I doubt everyone else in the gym would want to watch Live With Kelly and Michael like I did every morning!  LOVE that show 🙂

As far as machines, you can find a machine to work every muscle group.  If I were to guess, I’d say there were around 10-12 different machines in the fitness center.

There are also two sets of free weights to choose from.  They are in great condition and won’t leave your hands all “rusty smelling” 🙂

They also have extras such as a couple stability balls, mats, and weighted bars to enhance your workout.  I was even able to teach my dad a bunch of new core exercises that he could do at home!

Yep….I was a sweaty mess….hitting up some planks to end my workout.

Another perk is the view!  You can look over pool and bright blue skies when doing cardio.  If you don’t want to watch TV while working out, no problem!  Here’s the view from one of the elipticals.

Alternates to the gym:

Although the gym is perfect, you also have a lot of options to do outdoors.  It’s hard to stay inside sometimes when you’re in such a beautiful place so if you want to get outside for your workout some days, you can run to the beach (it’s a challenge though because of all the Cali hills!!!) or you can rent bikes from the spa for $45 for 4 hours.

I ended up going to the gym most days but then ran to the beach one day and biked 10 miles to Balboa Island another day.

To put it simply, there are a lot of options to stay fit at this resort.

My favorite parts of the Pelican Hill Gym:

It has everything you need from machines, plenty of cardio equipment, free weights, ice water,  towels and complimentary head phones to plug into the cardio equipment..

The worst part of the Pelican Hill Gym:

The smells.  No, the gym itself doesn’t smell bad.  The smells coming from breakfast across from the gym smell sooooo good and made me hungry!

mmmmmmm I could smell the bacon!

My overall grade: A+

I don’t know what else I would add to this hotel gym to make it any better..honestly!
