How Blogging Bought Me A House

I have some VERY exiting and interesting news for you guys today.   As most of you know, I purchased my first investment home in October.  We are working on fixing it up and then renting it to college students in May.  The one part of the story I haven’t shared with you guys yet is that…

I bought my house through BLOGGING!!!

blogging

Let me explain more about how this all happened and when I started….

I started this blog in January, 2012 which was just two years ago.  (Here’s my old post on the specifics of how to start a blog but I won’t go into that in this post)  Honestly, I started this to keep myself accountable.  I figured when I told the world that I would be working out later, I would HAVE to do it or else I’d look like a liar.  No one likes a liar!

I slowly started seeing people commenting on my blog and that’s when the fun started.  People were ACTUALLY READING what I had to say!  This was a shock to me…I couldn’t believe it!

I then set up a Facebook Page for my blog so that my little old blog would have a face in the Facebook world.    Slowly, people started “liking” my page and it has grown to what it is today.

I continued to post about my workouts & nutrition.  I also used my blog as a tool to track my first bikini competition prep.  I was TERRIFIED to admit on my blog that I would be doing a bikini competition because I knew as soon as I posted it, I couldn’t back out.  This is the type of motivation that I needed, so I kept blogging.  This blog keeps me on track with my goals and has grown me as an individual SOO SO SO SO SO much.

Anyway…

When I first started blogging, I always wondered “Can you make money blogging?”  I had heard about people making money by blogging but I had no idea how to do it.  Leave it to the I.T. nerdy girl that I am…I slowly figured it out.  I’ll explain more in detail.

My first source of income for my blog was Google Adsense.  This is the easiest form of advertising possible.  You sign up with an account, you put some code on your site and then Google places ads on your site!  Easy as pie!  I remember the first day I saw $.10 in my account, I was ecstatic and knew it was possible!

Sorry If I got a bit techy on ya there!  Oops..the computer nerd side of me took over.

So….how did all this lead to me buying a house?

First, I want to preface this by saying the house I purchased was not some extraordinary, move in ready, beautiful house.   I wanted to buy a fixer upper that I could renovate and then rent out to college kids.  My boyfriend has several investment homes right by the one I bought, so he helped me find the best one.  The day it went on the market, I went to see it and put a full price offer in that night.  I knew it was a good one that was going to go FAST.

In order to buy this house, I needed to save up $9,235.11 for a down-payment.  I was able to save up this amount of money in one year and 10 months!!!

I never spent a penny that I earned through blogging.  I put every single bit of it into a savings account where it earned interest and grew.  I threw all my money in a CapitalOne 360 Savings account and never touched it!

I’m not going to lie and act like it was all just a walk in the park.  I worked my butt of on creating good content for my blog, starting my own online personal training business, and becoming an Isagenix consultant (Isagenix alone led me to earning over half of what I needed!).

Blogging is fun but it’s also a job.  In order to get return readers, you have to create quality content.  I easily spend 10 hours a week on my blog.

As soon as I found the right house, I transferred my money from the savings account and wrote a check for the bank!  I have been wanting to blog about this for so long, but I just wasn’t sure if I should or not.  I’m not sure how people will take it. I don’t want people to think the only reason I blog is to make money.  That’s just simply not true.  I decided to take my chances and do a post about it anyway.  My goal of this post is that hopefully I will inspire some of you to start your own blog.   Not only has this website kept me on track with my health, it’s also helping me financially in a way that I never thought was possible.

I could have spent the money in a different way and bought some tangible type of things like clothes or saved up for a car, but I wanted my money to continue “working for me” and appreciate.  Now that I have a rental property, I’ll be able to rent it out and make more money every month!!!

With the rental property I purchased through this blog, I will be able to make around $300 more a month!  My blogging money will be working for me!!

I just had to share this with you guys.  I’ve been wanting to shout it from the rooftops since October but finally thought this was the time to share about how it all happened.

Most importantly, I want to end this post with a huge THANK YOU.  If it weren’t for my loyal fans, I would not have been able to do this.  It is your dedication and loyalty that has led me to my success.  I sincerely thank you for following this blog and my Facebook page.

  1. That so awesome! I hope to get to that place in the next year or two. Taking my own blog to the next level, and will probably go to BlueHost for a change. 🙂

  2. Thank you so much for this post! I’ve been wanting and waiting for too long to start my own fitness/motivation blog as well as an online coaching business, and I’ve come across your blog a few times now. You’ve definitely inspired me to get moving and just jump in. What would your main advice be for someone who wants to start online coaching?

    • Start with just one client so you can get the hang of it first before bringing on more clients. Each client takes a lot more time that I ever imagined but then again I like to be very in touch with my clients and respond quickly so that played a big role for me. Just ease into it and make sure they take before and after pics!
