Kitchen Floor Makeover – Before and After

Last night we went over to our rental to finish cleaning before the new renters moved in the next morning. As I talked about in my last post, we’ve been cleaning and renovating the place for the past 2 weeks.  We only had about an hour of work left to do until the place was move in ready. We headed to Menards to get some paper towels and what do you know…we walk out with new flooring to put in the kitchen. We decided to install new flooring in the kitchen the night before. There’s nothing like cutting it close to our deadline and pushing it to the limits!

We picked up some Armstrong vinyl tiles (Elston style) for only $.68/sq ft.

Here’s a picture of our rental’s kitchen floor before last night. It’s been there since we bought the place 8 years ago.  Who knows how long it was there with the previous owner!  It had mismatched tiles and a the picture actually makes it look nicer than it really was.  It was way worse than it looks in the picture.

I started laying the floor at 9pm and it was pretty darn simple. You just have to peel and stick the tiles. You start in the middle of the floor by dropping a chalk line and working your way out. On the perimeter of the kitchen, you have to score each piece to cut them and put into place. After only 2 1/2 hours and some sticky fingers, we had a new kitchen floor!

At 11:30 last night, we were done!  Here is the after picture of the new floor.

I think it looks pretty darn good for a quick and cheap kitchen floor remodel for only about $70! Can’t beat that!

Here is the before and after picture next to each other to see the difference.  This floor is perfect and will be super durable for whatever these college guys decide to do to it!  Hopefully we won’t have to worry about it again for several years.
