Should Women Lift Heavy Weights?

I’m already pretty sore from yesterday’s killer leg workout!  I can’t imagine what I’m going to feel like tomorrow when DOMS kicks in.  I’m the kinda girl that loves the feeling of sore muscles though.  That means my body is changing!

I had several questions yesterday about whether or not other girls should lift heavy like I do.  In my opinion …YES YES YES!

You need to lift heavy in order to build muscle, lean down and get rid of that stubborn old fat!  The more muscle you have on you, the more your metabolism will speed up and you will lose inches throughout your whole body.

So ladies, put down those pink dumbbells and grab some heavy iron.

I know it can be scary..believe me.  I was so scared to lift heavy when I first started out.  My boyfriend would always insist that I wouldn’t “bulk” but it took my own experience to realize..he was right.  Women don’t have the testosterone in their body to create the muscle mass that men can.  Believe me…it’s way harder than it looks to build muscle!  If it was easy, everyone would be doing it 😉

So today when you go workout, pick up a weight that challenges you so by your last few reps, you can barely finish with good form.  Those last few reps are your “growth reps” which I like to call them.  When you challenge your muscles, they go through muscle hypertrophy, causing them to adapt to the changes and grow! You need to really challenge yourself to see changes in your body.  If your workout routine is comfortable, you’re doing something wrong!

Anyway….

Before my competition, I did a photo-shoot with a fitness magazine.  I FINALLY got the CD with all my pictures back.  I just wanted to share one of my favorites.  I have several more that I’m going to post soon.

I’m planning on doing another shoot in February except this time it’s going to be a fitness type of video advertisement!  I’ve never done a shoot that’s live video before.  It should be interesting!

  1. I did back and biceps yesterday and upped my dumbbell weight from 8 lbs to 10. I DEFINITELY noticed a difference, and by the time I was doing Standing Bicep Cable Curls, I had the hardest time finishing, but I feel so awesome about it. My muscles are just now starting to hurt, but it’s a good hurt. 🙂
