My Gym Journal

I’ve learned the importance of keeping track of my workouts.  In the past year that I’ve started lifting, I realized that I need to push myself harder than I did the last time. It’s important to keep track of the weight and reps of each exercise so you know where to start the next time.

When I first started lifting, I never kept a journal.  I would always guess my starting weight and work off that.  I found myself not lifting as heavy because it wouldn’t push me to start as heavy as I should have.

I wanted to share my workout journal with you guys today!   This is how I keep track of my workouts.  It’s not the most glamorous thing you’ve ever seen, but it does the job!

It has a pen holder attached and a hard cover.  I bring it with me every day to the gym.

I write down my workout every day and leave spaces to fill in the weight and reps.  I put the date and time at the top and I also add any notes on how I felt that day and where I struggled.

At the bottom of each day, I’ll list the cardio I did (if any) and also my heart rate average, maximum and calories burned.  Yeah….you can tell I like to track EVERYTHING.

At the back of the book, it has a little pocket which is perfect for my printed workouts.  I keep them there and copy them onto the page when I do it.

I remember when I first found this journal and logged my first couple workouts in it.  I told my boyfriend, “Imagine if I ever finished so many workouts that I finished all these pages!” I remember thinking that would be a crazy and long journey if that were to ever happen.  Well….I only have a few pages left, folks!  I don’t know how many pages were in this thing but there were a LOT!

You can see the black place holder that is at the bottom left of the picture.  That’s how far along I am in my journal!  Wow!

There are many other journals you can find online or you can just make your own out of any notebook you find at the store.

Here’s a cute one!!!  It’s a 160 page journal that you can order with lines or blank pages.  Cute Cute CUTE!  If you want to order one, you can HERE.

Do you keep a workout journal to push you every day?

  1. Oh, I had just begun tracking my progress on google dokuments’ sheet! But I think that probably such journal would be much much better as you actually have it with you and can make such notes as how did you feel and such, which you can actually forget by the time you get home… Hm, I really need to order myself such a journal! Youe see, I’m a tracking nerd too, hehe)))))

  2. I completely agree with you 100% about keeping a journal of your workouts. I have recently just started writing down my workouts and I realized that you do go up in strength. I feel as if you constantly remind yourself of the weight you are lifting when writing it down, you tell yourself that you want those numbers to change. The change in values of sets and reps correlates to a positive change in your body, and everybody wants that! Thanks for the great article btw! 🙂
