How To Start Your Own Fitness Blog!

A lot of people have messaged me recently asking how they can start their own fitness blog. so I thought I’d write up a quick post on how I did it!  A few years ago I didn’t even know what blogging was and now it’s a part of my life.  I have found that blogging has helped me TREMENDOUSLY in my fitness adventure because it holds me accountable and I LOVE the support I get from my readers :).

I’ve suggested to several people that they should start their own blog to share their own recipes, fitness tips & exercise journey.

I have a degree in computers so this stuff comes naturally to me. If you have any questions, feel free to comment below!

I’ve simplified the process of starting your own blog into 4 simple steps.

1.) Get Started with WordPress.  I started my blog on WordPress.com which is free! It is the easiest way to get your blog up and running. You don’t have to pay for a domain name or hosting account!  The downside of using WordPress.com is that it will edit your website name to include the name “wordpress” in it.  For example, when I first started, my blog’s name was http://www.livelifeactive.wordpress.com.

When I decided I just wanted it to be http://www.livelifeactive.com, I then registered with WordPress.org.  This allowed me the freedom of creating the domain name that I wanted. WordPress.org is SUPER easy to use and is very user friendly.  It has a ton of widgets that can help your website be interactive and fun!  WordPress.org is also free but you’ll have to purchase your domain name that you want (ex. www.livelifeactive.com) and a hosting plan. This isn’t hard though, so don’t get scared!!! I feel that having your own domain name and hosting makes your site MUCH more professional.

2.) Buy your domain name. This is the fun part! Decide what your want your blog website to be.  Go to GoDaddy.com or click on the image below to search to see what web addresses are available and register for a Go Daddy domain name. Domain names are cheap! They are only about $13 for a whole year!

3.) Purchase Hosting. You’ll need to buy your hosting next.  This is where all the information that you write on your blog is stored. You have to pay for the storage space of your website. The options below are a few that I recommend.

BlueHost – You can buy hosting through the BlueHost by clicking the image below.  The cost of this service is only about $9 a month.

OR

Host Gator – You can buy hosting here for less than $10 a month.

I have had great success with both, BlueHost and HostGator, so that’s completely your choice!  Choose wisely because this step is important.  Unfortunately, I’ve seen so many blogs crash or have down time due to their bad hosting provider (NOT THE TWO ABOVE), so I strongly recommend choosing one of these two.  I’ve never had a problem (knock on wood…).

4.) Start Blogging! Have fun and design your blog through the wordpress editor!!!! Create a fitness or food blog that will inspire others and hold you accountable for your goals!

If you end up starting a blog, leave your link below and I will check it out!

  1. Hi Erin,

Thanks for sharing this with me. I may start blogging. I need something to keep me accountable. I know what to do but I seem to stray from the fit/healthy path quite often. 🙂

    • You should, girl!! It has helped me SO much. There’s nothing like telling the world that you’re going to go to the gym and then coming back the next day to blog saying you didn’t do what you said. It completely helps to keep me motivated. I can’t wait to start reading your blog 🙂 Let me know when you start one!

  2. Thanks for this post! I’ve just started blogging and am using blogger to host it. Although your post is pushing me towards buying my own domain name. So many people I meet have asked me what my blog’s address is and I always feel a little silly having to say “.blogspot.com.” $13 a year sounds worth it. That’s less than a meal at a restaurant.

  5. Hi Erin,
I just started my own blog, mainly because i all game for getting fit, eating healthy, and just making myself a whole other person and i made a blog so that others could read it and give feedback to help me out and keep me motivated. I did sign up with WordPress but i am going the free way first. Will others see my blog since it is free? I am still messing around with it because there is so much you can do with it.

    • Yes they can see your blog if you go through the free way but it will probably have an extension on your site like “.wordpress.com” which isn’t always as user friendly if you want people to remember your blog name. Make sure to sign up for the hosting if you want that extension removed.
