Race For The Cure Indianapolis 2012 Recap

I decided last minute to run in the Race For The Cure in Indianapolis this past weekend. I’m so glad I made this last minute decision. I’ve done this race one other time in the past and it’s so unbelievably amazing to see how many people come out for this great cause. There were around 30,000 people participating  this year!!! I saw so many breast cancer survivors who were proud to be running/walking in this event. If you’ve never done a Race For The Cure, I completely recommend it!!

The race was on Saturday at 9am. The last time I did this race, I was cutting it too close on time and had to literally run to the starting line and made it just in time to catch the beginning of the race. This year I made sure I was early. I showed up around 7:45 and was able to walk around and enjoy the event MUCH more than the previous year.

The only bad thing about Saturday was that it was COLD! It was about 42 degrees. I had long pants and a long sleeve shirt on, but I never managed to get warm – even DURING the race! My hands froze the whole time during the race which was kind of odd!

My boyfriend was so awesome to join me at this race and was the designated photographer for my friend and I.  At one point, he looked at me and was shocked to see that my lips were BLUE!  I was that cold my lips were blue! haha..yeah for some reason I’m always cold and this race was no different.

Anyway…Here are some pictures from race day.

Before the race...right before my lips turned blue 😉
Stretching before the race. Had to keep my muscles warm because it was so cold out!

Trying to stay warm before the race

This is only the 4th 5k I’ve ever run in.  I ran with my friend the ENTIRE time which was so awesome.  It’s hard to find someone who has the same pace as you, but we started and ended together!  I felt great almost the whole race.  The only part that I struggled with was about 8 minutes in when I got a crazy cramp in my side.  I was so worried it would stick with me the whole time, but I grabbed some water on the side of the road and a few minutes later I was as good as new!

We ran through downtown Indianapolis and around the Canal.  It was a pretty run.  I’m somewhat new to Indianapolis so it’s always nice to explore the city by foot 🙂

In the end, we finished (without ever stopping!!!) in 28:45.  I was very happy with our time.  It wasn’t a personal record for me, but I will take that time for SURE!  I had a great time and it was for such a great cause.

Have you ever run in a Race For The Cure 5k?  If you haven’t, you really should look into it when it comes to a city near you!
