I completed my first 5k and am SOOOOO proud of myself and my results!!! I ended up running it in about 27:20!!! Way better than I thought I’d do. Let’s rewind a little…
Saturday morning was the earliest I’ve woken up on a weekend in a long long time. It was 10 minutes earlier than I usually wake up for work! I was excited though, so it made it easier to get outta bed. The night before I was a little anxious so I had a hard time sleeping. I felt okay though. The weather was cold, so I dressed warm.
My pre 5k meal was an english muffin with Laughing Cow light spread. It was a perfect meal that gave me enough energy for the race.
When I got downtown Indianapolis, I couldn’t believe how many people were there! There was about 40,000 people in the race plus visitors..so needless to say, it was packed. As we were standing around before the race, I realized that my car key had fallen out of my iPod case that I had it in!!! When I figured this out, it was 10 minutes before the race! I started to freak out. I called the BF and told him to pick me up in about 45 minutes. I finally calmed down until we realized we were very far from the starting line and the competitive race started in 3 minutes!! We BOOKED it along the sidewalks of the road while the walkers were all stopped and lined up to begin their walk in the middle of the road. We got to the front of the people just before the walkers started. My big mistake was that I didn’t walk THROUGH the gate that started the race. I walked about 10 feet in front of the race starting line because the crowds were so big and couldn’t get in there. So….my race chip didn’t register my start time 🙁 Luckily I had my iPhone with me that I started a few seconds after getting on the track. My overall time was 27:13 but it would be safe to say I did it in about 27:20 because it took me a few seconds to start my iPhone time. The chip time that posted online for me only registered my end time which was very inaccuracte because it registered it as if I was the first in the starting line when I was almost last to start. Good to know if I do another race.
On a good note, my Nike Plus was totally accurate. I always wondered if the distance calibration is accurate, and it registered 3.1 miles when a 5k is technically 3.106. Perfect!
About my issue of weather or not I should run with my friend or go ahead of her…well she said she wanted to start with me and then would let me go when she felt like walking. We started off pretty fast. It was faster than my pace would normally be but I didn’t say anything. After about 6 and a half minutes she told me to go ahead because she wanted to walk for a minute. My one goal of the race was to run the whole thing without walking. I DID IT! I didn’t walk once! I wanted to so many times, but forced myself to keep going. I like the motivation I get with the crowds of people around. It really helped mentally. I thought I’d stop to walk a few times but in my head I kept thinking that I didn’t want anyone to see me walking…especially the helicopters above us that were filming the race for the news. How much would that SUCK if I walked for only 1 minute and then that’s the moment they show on TV. I’d be pissed! So, I sucked it up and ran it all. Yayyyyy.
Afterwards I walked around for a few minutes and then headed back because I had a long day ahead of me still. Here’s a picture of me right after the race with my cute shirt we made. They turned out awesome!
The BF and I then went and got some good old TB. I had to rush and eat and shower because my Chicago girls were getting in town an hour after TB. I raced around to shower and clean the place and then my girls arrived. It was awesome seeing them. One of them came from Chicago and one just moved to St. Louis so it was good to get together again. We headed downtown Indy to the bridal shower which was nice. Afterwards we went to a winery followed by a few bars downtown. We actually ended up going in to an OTB bar at one point and a few people made some bets on horses and one of them won some cash 🙂
(picture with myself, the future bride and maid of honor) Little tidbit of info I found out…the bride is Shredding with Jillian too! She’s doing it every other day and seriously she looks GREAT from it. She’s so toned and she’s loving the program.
Afterwards, someone mentioned they wanted to go to a cigar bar, so we did that. How random is that for a bridal shower party haha. It sounds like it was more of a bachelor party then bridal shower. I’ll never go back to the cigar bar though, wayyyy to dark and smokey.
After that we headed to a friend’s 30th bday party at another bar on the North side. By this time we were really good and wasted. We stayed there for a while and proceeded to have people over at our house after the bars. I don’t know how I lasted so long!!! It had to be one of the longest days of my life!
It was a pain being so busy and being on-call for work. I had to keep my pager attached to me at all times. I thought I was going to lose it many times when we were out drinking, but surprisingly I never did, until Sunday of course. I left my pager in a friend’s car. When I realized I lost it, I totally freaked out and went into panic mode. Luckily he had it in his car. Pheww!! I was going to be so mad if I made it all night out drinking with the pager but then I lose it the next morning when I’m sober. The best part is that the pager didn’t go off at all, so I never had to rush home to fix any systems.
Sorry about the long post, but it was a busy weekend! I hope everyone had a great weekend and everyone who did a race did the best they could 🙂 Have a good Monday.
